Uttar Pradesh Civic Elections 2017: Lucknow Municipal Corporation to Get Its First Woman Mayor in 100 Years of History - JPKee.com
Lucknow, Nov 25: Lucknow is all set to get its first woman mayor in 100 years of its history. Although the state got first woman governor and first Chief Minister decades ago, the city will get its first woman mayor after the results are announced. All political parties including dominant Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party have fielded woman candidate for the mayoral post.
Samajwadi Party has decided to field the kin of freedom fighter Acharya Narendra Dev, Meera Vardhan. Her affidavit, submitted to the Election Commission, revealed she is the richest candidate with assets worth Rs 18.98 crore and liabilities of Rs 1.84 crore.
Vardhan is followed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sanyukta Bhatia who owns assets worth Rs 8.69 crore. Bhatia hails from a family with traditional BJP supporters. Her husband, Satish Bhatia, was a former legislator from Lucknow Cantt.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Bulbul Godiyal owns assets worth Rs. 2.46 crore and liabilities of Rs 10 Lakh. Interestingly, none of the candidates have any criminal cases against them.
Freedom fighters Sarojini Naidu and Sucheta Kriplani were the country’s first woman govenor and chief minister respectively. Naidu was the governor of the United Provinces, now known as Uttar Pradesh, from 1947 to 1949. Born in a Bengali family on February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad, she was educated in Chennai, London and Cambridge.
Similarly, Kriplani held the chief minister’s office from 1963 to 1967. She was one of the few women who were elected to the Constituent Assembly and was part of the sub-committee that drafted the Constitution.
A woman has never before been elected as head of the municipal body. This time, however, the Lucknow mayoral seat has been reserved for women, hence all parties have fielded women candidates.
