New Delhi: Out of favour Kamran Akmal and dope-tainted Salman Butt on Friday (November 24) created a new record for the opening wicket partnership during the domestic National T20 Cup in Rawalpindi. Playing for Lahore Whites, Akmal and Butt shared an unbeaten stand of 209 runs for the first wicket. The duo broke the previous record of 207 runs set by Kent’s Joe Denly and Daniel Bell-Drummond in August this year.


During this record partnership, the majority of runs came from Akmal’s bat. The right-hander scored unbeaten 150 off just 71 balls to register the highest ever T20 score by a Pakistan batsman. The wicket-keeper batsman during his stay smashed 14 fours and 12 sixes.

Butt, on the other end, played second fiddle to Akmal who was toying with Islamabad bowlers. The left-hander scored 55 not out off 49 balls including eight fours. All five Islamabad bowlers conceded over nine runs per over. The most economical of the bowlers was spinner Raza Hassan who gave away 38 runs from four overs at an economy of 9.50. Fast bowler Mohammad Irfan was the expensive of the lot, giving away 48 runs from four overs.


After Akmal and Butt carrying their bat throughout the 20 overs, the target for Islamabad was set to 210. In reply, Islamabad were bundled out for just 100 runs.


For Lahore Whites, Asif Ali and Bilal Asif picked three wickets each.


Akmal, who was adjudged man of the match for his mammoth knock, also became the third batsman in T20 history after Virender Sehwag and Hamilton Masakadza to score five 50-plus scores in consecutive innings.
