Delhi Metro Loses 3 Lakh Customers Per Day After Fare Hike in October - JPKee.com

New Delhi, Nov 24: An RTI revealed that the Delhi Metro has lost at least three lakh passengers since October after the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced a steep fare hike, which was opposed by the Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal.

The RTI revealed that the average ridership came down to 24.2  lakh per day in October from 27.4 lakh passengers per day in September. The fall is a steep 11 per cent.

The busiest, Blue Line, lost 30 lakh passengers in total since the fare hike.The Yellow line, which connects Gurgaon to north Delhi’s Samaypur Badli, lost 19 lakh passengers up to now.

This means that the Delhi Metro is losing Rs 30 lakh per day if it is considered that every passenger would have bought token of the lowest value.

The DMRC raised the fair in October, making the maximum fare changed to be Rs 60. The revised fare structure was: up to 2 km – Rs 10, 2 to 5 km –Rs 20, 5 to 12 km–Rs 30, 12 to 21 km–Rs 40, 21 to 32 km–Rs 50 and for journeys beyond 32 km–Rs 60.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had opposed the fare hike. The Centre had said that it was ready to take back the hike if the Delhi government was ready to foot the bill.

The Delhi High Court had also refused to interfere in the matter.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar also observed that this was a policy decision.

“We are not inclined to interfere with it (the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) decision. Neither do we have any jurisdiction to go into it,” the bench had said.
