New Delhi, Nov 22: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to revise the salary of Supreme Court and High Court judges, said Union Minister holding Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad. The benefits of the pay revision to Supreme Court and High Court judges will be given from January 1, 2016. The matter was already under the consideration of the government after the recommendation of the 7th Pay Commission.
“The Cabinet approved pay hike of 31 Supreme Court judges, 1079 High Court judges and 2,500 retired judges,” Ravi Shankar Prasad told media after the Cabinet meeting. The minister further said that a bill would be introduced in Parliament to effect the pay hike. The then Chief Justice of India T S Thakur had written to the government in 2016 seeking a hike in salaries of Supreme Court and High Court judges.
A Supreme Court judge at present gets Rs 1.5 lakh a month in hand after all deductions from salary and allowances. The CJI gets a higher amount than this, while the judges of the high courts get a lesser amount. Rent-free accommodation is provided to the judges while they are in service.
