Padmavati Row: Venkaiah Naidu Warns Against Undermining Law of Country, Says Violent Threats Not Acceptable in Democracy - JPKee.com
New Delhi, Nov 25: Amid the Padmavati movie row, Vice president Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said that issuing violent threats and announcing rewards for physical harm is not acceptable in a democracy. Not directly referring to the Padmavati controversy across Rajasthan and other parts of the country but art in general, Venkaiah Naidu warned against undermining the rule of law in the country. Naidu was speaking at a literary festival in New Delhi.
While indirectly referring to the movie Padmavati, Naidu said that nowadays people believe they have hurt sentiments of some people and the community that have led to the protests against the movie or them. While protesting, Naidu said, people go overboard and even announce rewards for physical harm. While reading out names of some of the banned movies such as Garam Hawa, Kissa Kursi Ka, and Aandhi, he said that he is not talking about a particular film but speaking in general.
“Whether these fellows have that much money or not, I doubt. Everyone is announcing Rs one crore reward. Is it so easy to have Rs one crore? This is not acceptable in a democracy. You have the right to protest in a democratic manner, go to the appropriate authorities…you cannot physically obstruct and can’t give violent threats. Let us not undermine the rule of law,” he said.
Speaking against selective condemnation, the vice president said it is not right to link it to religion. There is a need to respect sentiments of the common people, he said, adding, “We cannot say that outrage by one community is right and another is wrong.” “Let the debate go on, the beauty of democracy is the right to agree to disagree,” he said.
The remarks by vice president Venkaiah Naidu come amid protests by many groups against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati. Various groups such as Karni Sena have alleged that Bhansali distorted history in his movie Padmavati played by actor Deepika Padukone. Karni Sena alleged that Bhansali disrespected queen Padmavati in the movie where he has suggested that she was romantically involved with Alauddin Khilji.
Bhansali, on the other hand, has claimed that there is no such scene involved in the movie. It should be noted that the Karni Sena has not watched the movie yet.
On Friday, a local jeweller, identified as Chetan Saini, was found hanging at Jaipur’s famous Nahargarh fort main gate. On the stones nearby was scribbled “Hum sirf putle nahi latkate Padmavati (We don’t just hang effigies Padmavati)”. Another graffiti read, “Padmavati ka virodh (Protest against Padmavati)”.
