Mulayam Singh Yadav Justifies Police Firing on Kar Sevaks in 1990, Says Security Forces Would Have Killed More For Country’s Unity - JPKee.com

Lucknow, Nov 22: Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday justified his order to fire on Kar Sevaks at the disputed Ram Janambhoomi-Babri mosque site in 1990 saying that the security forces would have killed more if required for the unity of the country. The former UP chief minister was quoted as saying while addressing a gathering at the SP headquarters in Lucknow on his 79th birthday celebration.

“Desh ki ekta ke liye aur bhi maarna padta toh suraksha bal maartey (If more people were required to killed for the country’s unity, the security forces would have done it),” he was quoted as saying, PTI reported. Justifying his actions to save the Babri Masjid, Yadav further said that a number of “Muslims had taken up arms saying if their place of worship ceased to exist, then what would remain in the country.”

Remembering one of his arguments with Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the SP founder said that 28 people were killed in the police firing but the former prime minister claimed that 56 had lost lives. “I had arguments with him. In reality, 28 were killed. I came to know the toll six months later and I helped them in my own way,” he said.

Speaking to his supporters, Yadav said the Muslim community still supports the party and “it is the fault of our men that we did not get them for votes. They are still voting for the party and not against it. It’s the shortcoming of our youth.” He added that even after firing, “when the opposition termed me as a hatyara (killer)”, the SP won over 100 seats in 1993.

Yadav said that it is shame that the Samajwadi Party won only 47 of the 403 assembly seats in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017.

“They (youths) now are not like those we had in 1993. When a leader could not ensure victory on his village booth, what will be the party’s fate? I want to see a strong party and leaders should also mend their ways by ensuring better connect with the masses,” he said.

In October 1990, a lakh Kar Sevaks assembled at the disputed Ram Janambhoomi-Babri mosque site for the construction of a temple. The firing had earned him the nickname of ‘Mullah Mulayam’. The police fired live ammo ion the Kar Sevaks on October 30 and November 2.
