Ahmedabad, Nov 19: The Congress on Sunday released its first list of candidates for Gujarat assembly elections. The list featured 11 Patel candidates. Gujarat Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil will be contesting the Mandvi seat.

The list was delayed after members of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) expressed their unhappiness on a slew of issues including allocation of tickets to Patel candidates. Although, Gujarat Congress President Bharat Sinh Solanki said the Patidar leaders had not asked for tickets in their conversation.

“Earlier, we had asked the Congress to clarify how they would grant Patidars a constitutionally valid reservation. Today, we held a crucial meeting on that issue and finally reached a consensus on various options offered by the party to us. Official announcement of this agreement will be made by Hardik tomorrow in Rajkot,” said Bambhania, a key aide of Hardik Patel.

In 2012 Gujarat Assembly Elections, Congress won 57 out of 182 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered victory on 119 seats. It was left with only 43 MLAs after over dozen of them defected.

The Congress, which has been out of power in the key western state for over 22 years now, has been trying hard to increase its tally in the state.

The last date of filing nominations for the first phase of polls in Gujarat is November 21. Voting for the first phase will be held on December 9 while the second phase will go to polls on December 14. The counting of votes will take place on December 18.
