A fact that most of us already knew have been authenticated by a study, the fact that dog owners live much healthier, happier and longer lives. Dogs are known to be loyal and a man’s best friend. There is some inherent quality that a dog has that tears at your heart when it looks at you with puppy eyes and the wagging tail. No other animal is as loving, as friendly and so emotionally intelligent and wired to humans than dogs. People who love cats might love to disagree but the fact is that a dog’s love is selfless compared to anyone else’s. A study published in Nature shows that dog owners both live a longer and a healthier life as they have a lesser risk of cardiovascular disease. So if you have a dog you might have fewer chances of suffering a heart attack but you may trip over the balls.
The study collected data of more than 3 million individuals between the ages of 40 and 80 and discovered that people with a pet dog register a 33% lesser chances of death and 11% decrease in suffering from cardiovascular disease compared to single non-dog owners. It is because a dog owner has to exercise the dog regularly ensuring that they invariably have to walk but the dogs make their lives happier. Also, a dog owner gets to meet more people and eventually have a bigger circle of social contacts, thanks to their dog. Mwenya Mubanga, the study’s lead author said in a media release, “A very interesting finding in our study was that dog ownership was especially prominent as a protective factor in persons living alone, which is a group reported previously to be at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and death than those living in a multi-person household. Perhaps a dog may stand in as an important family member in the single households.” The study also showed that larger breeds of dogs have a more favourable effect on the owner than smaller breeds. Another positive point that a dog owner has on his side is the effect of the dog on the bacterial microbiome in the owner. Isn’t it enough for you to go and adopt a canine today?
