Congress Working Committee Announces Schedule For Internal Polls, Rahul Gandhi Set to be Elevated as Party President on December 19 - JPKee.com

New Delhi, Nov 20: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Monday announced dates for its internal elections, paving the way for Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi to be the party president. It was earlier expected that Rahul Gandhi’s coronation would take place before December 9– when Gujarat goes to polls. However, now, it is clear that he would be elevated post Gujarat polls.
The Congress party had told the Election Commission that it would hold internal elections before 2017 ends. It was earlier expected that Rahul Gandhi will campaign in Gujarat elections as party president. However, the delay in the internal elections had given rise to speculations that he might be elected to the biggest party post after results for the elections are announced on December 18.
Zee News reported that the internal elections would be conducted on December 16 and he would become the party president on December 19– a day after poll results will be announced in Gujarat.
It is still unclear whether any candidate will contest elections against Rahul Gandhi. However, elections or not, his taking the reins of the party is a foregone conclusion.
The Congress Working Committee also decided that in case no candidate apart from Rahul Gandhi comes forward, the party will announce him to be the next Congress President on the last date of scrutiny.
The CWC also approved the schedule for the internal elections. The issue of notification will be on December 1. Last date of nomination is December 4, last date of scrutiny is December 5. The publication of valid nomination will be on December 5. Last date for withdrawal is December 11. Voting will be held on December 16, if at all necessary. Counting will be held on December 19.
Correction: Earlier, it was reported in this report that the Congress Working Committee had passed a resolution to make Rahul Gandhi party president. Now, it has emerged that no resolution was passed. The information has been corrected.
