BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile Successfully Test-fired From Sukhoi-30MKI Fighter Jet - JPKee.com

New Delhi, Nov 21: In a first, India on Wednesday successfully test-fired BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet. The lethal combo of BrahMos missile and Sukhoi fighter jet will give Indian defence forces a much needed advantage in case of a conflict. The missile hit a sea-based target in the Bay of Bengal from the combat jet.

The BrahMos cruise missile travels at a speed three times that of sound at Mach 2.8, while the Sukhoi jet has a cruising range of 3,000 km.  The airforce version of BrahMos missile, developed jointly by India and Russia, is considered to be the fastest in the world. It has a strike range of range of 290 km and can carry conventional warhead up to 300 kg.

Congratulating DRDO and BrahMos team for the missile launch, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharama described the feat as historic. (Also Read: IAF to Equip Su-30MKI With Advanced Radar, Missiles)

“India creates a world record and completes Supersonic Cruise Missile Triad by successfully testing #BRAHMOS #ALCM from Indian Air Force Sukhoi-30MKI fighter aircraft. Smt @nsitharaman congratulates Team Brahmos & @DRDO_India for this historic achievement,” Sitharaman tweeted.

According to reports, the missile’s weight and design were tweaked a bit to integrate it in the Sukhoi.

With the successful test, BrahMos has become the first weapon system in the world to have capability to be fired from land, sea and air platforms. BrahMos is a joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of India and NPOM of Russia.
