Yemeni Man Fined For His ‘Suicide Bomber’ Halloween Costume in Malaysia - JPKee.com

Each year, the Halloween celebrations get more bizarre as do the outfits that people wear to these parties. People let their “creativity” reflect in their costumes, which now include zombie feet slippers, middle finger shaped jumpsuits to even pregnant wear that shows a dragon coming out of the womb instead of a baby. But the one that takes the cake for this year at least is that of a Yemeni IT professional. The man spooked the residents of an apartment in Malaysia when he showed up as a “suicide bomber” for a Halloween party. The “costume” naturally didn’t go down well with the police, who were alerted about his presence. After spending a week in police lock-up, the man was let off after paying a hefty fine of RM400 (USD 100) fine in a magistrate’s court.

The man who dressed up as the suicide bomber was identified as Amjad Jalal Ahmed Al Dahan. He had reportedly worn a fake beard and a cardboard belt with two empty water bottles stuck to it. He also draped a scarf around his neck when he attended the party in an apartment complex in Petaling Jaya, a city next to Kuala Lumpur. The police received a tip-off about a suicide bomber’s presence and confirmed this with the CCTV footage. The accused then had to spend a week in police lock-up. It might be noted that South Asian countries including Malaysia, Singapore, have been on high alert owing to a probability of terror threat.

Amjad, 34, pleaded guilty to dressing up as a suicide bomber in a public space, i.e. at the Armanee Terrace apartments, at 7.40pm on Oct 28, as reported in The Star Online. In the court, Amjad’s lawyer Puan Sri N. Saraswathy Devi pleaded for leniency and defended her client saying that he had only worn the outfit for a party and was deeply apologetic for the trouble he had caused.

Norazalina Razali, deputy public prosecutor, requested the court for an exemplary sentence due to public interest, and to show that it was an inappropriate attire for a costume, according to The Sun Online article. She said, “His action was irresponsible as there is no way for the public to differentiate between a genuine and costumed suicide bomber.” When the charge of causing public nuisance and the fine was read out to Amjad, he was reportedly happy.
