White House Calls For Immediate Prosecution of LeT Leader Hafiz Saeed, Warns Pakistan - JPKee.com
Washington, Nov 25: The White House on Saturday condemned the release of Lashkar-e-Taiba co-founder Hafiz Saeed and called for his immediate arrest and prosecution. Warning Pakistan of repercussions, the White House, in a statement, said, “If Pakistan does not take action to lawfully detain Saeed and charge him for his crimes, its inaction will have repercussions for bilateral relations and for Pakistan’s global reputation.”
“Hafiz Saeed’s release, after Pakistan’s failure to prosecute or charge him, sends a deeply troubling message about Pakistan’s commitment to international terrorism and belies Pakistani claims that it will not provide sanctuary for terrorists on its soil,” the White House said in a statement.
Calling the release the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief a step in the “wrong direction”, the White House said that the United States of America (USA) seeks a “constructive relationship with Pakistan but expects decisive action against militant& terrorist groups on Pak soil that are a threat to the region.”

Earlier, Pakistan justified the release of the mastermind of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks claiming Islamabad was committed to the implementation of United Nations Security Council 1267 sanctions regime on terrorists and Pakistan has taken several steps for it.
There were reports that the Punjab Pakistan government may file fresh charges against the JuD chief to rearrest him. The activities of JuD are “already under scanner and action in regard was taken many times in the past but this time we will do so again”, said an official from the Pakistan Punjab government. The move has come after Pakistan was slammed for releasing Saeed from his house arrest.
Hafiz Saeed was released on Friday after a three-judge review board rejected the Punjab Pakistan government’s appeal to extend Hafiz Saeed’s detention for three more months as it failed to provide enough evidence against him.
Following the ruling, Hafiz Saeed thanked the Lahore High Court judicial review board and said that he will fight for the freedom of Kashmir. “I fight the case of Kashmiris. I will gather the people from across the country for the cause of Kashmir. And we will try to help Kashmiris get their destination of freedom,” he said.
“India has always tried to do propaganda against me. But we will and have to fight for the freedom of Kashmir. We will do everything to free Kashmiris from Indian occupation,’ Hafiz Saeed added.
