West Bengal: Municipality Chairman Shot Dead in Hooghly District - JPKee.com



Chinsurah, Nov 22: A municipality chairman in Hooghly district was shot dead by unidentified assailants when he was returning home on a motorbike, the police claimed. According to a report, the Chairman, also a Trinamool Congress leader was shot from point blank range late on Tuesday night.


Identified as Bhadreswar Municipality Chairman Manoj Upadhyay,his bullet-ridden body was found near his motorcycle. Police claimed that at least two bullets hit his chest and abdomen and he was declared dead at a local sub-divisional hospital.


In this connection, the police arrested one person and detained five other for interrogation, Piyush Pande, Commissioner of Chandernagore Police Commissionerate, said


The official also said that there were multiple attackers and shot at Upadhyay after stopping his vehicle near a club on GT Road on his way back home.


Following the incident, several senior party functionaries reached Bhadreswar and tried diffusing the tension which prevailed after the murder. Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim and Agricultural Marketing Minister Tapan Dasgupta, besides TMC youth wing president Abhishek Banerjee also visited the area to defuse tension.


According to Hakim anti-socials from outside were hired to kill Upadhyay, as he was taking action against various illegal activities in the area. On the other hand, Dasgupta claimed that two TMC men who are planning to join the BJP might have link with the killers. However, according to District BJP president Bhaskar Bhattacharya, the incident is a result of internal bickering in the ruling TMC.
