Shashi Tharoor Uses Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar’s Surname as Pun to Tweet Against Demonetisation; Backfires - JPKee.com
New Delhi, Nov 19: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor used the surname of Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar’s as pun to tweet against demonetisation and it backfired with condemnation from the National Commission for Women and other Twitter users.
Tharoor tweeted soon after Chhillar won the pageant, using the surname for the hindi term for loose change ‘chillar’. He said, “What a mistake to demonetise our currency! BJP should have realised that Indian cash dominates the globe: look, even our Chhillar has become Miss World.”

Soon reprimanding his tweet, the National Commission for Women (NCW) said Tharoor degraded Chhillar’s achievement and demanded his apology. It also said the Commission will summon the Congress leader on his derogatory and degrading tweet. “She got fame and name to country by winning Miss World crown”, it said.
“He degraded the achievement of daughter of haryana and India who got glory to the country. Will he call his own daughter chillar? He must apologize immediately,” a tweet from NCWIndia said.

Tharoor also drew flake from the general public on Twitter, with one saying that it was a bad joke and people will not take it in good taste, another comparing his this tweet to his remark on Rajputs.
However, Tharoor also tweeted out later applauding Chhillar’s final reply about the profession she thinks deserves the highest salary. He praised her values in his tweet and called her a ‘bright young woman’.
Regarding the earlier comment when he used her surname as a pun, he said he apologises to anyone who was offended by his light-hearted tweet and asked people to ‘chill’.
“Guess the pun IS the lowest form of humour, & the bilingual pun lower still! Apologies to the many who seem to have been righteously offended by a light-hearted tweet today. Certainly no offence was meant to a bright young girl whose answer i’ve separately praised. Please: Chill! ” he tweeted later in defence.
Manushi Chhillar from Haryana was crowned as Miss World 2017 on Saturday in the annual event which was held in China this year. 17 years ago Priyanka Chopra was crowned the same title.
