In our childhood, most of us would have heard the fairy tale of Rapunzel, whose long golden hair was her defining feature. For some, however, this fairy tale has turned into horror owing to a rare mental disorder they suffer from, called the Rapunzel Syndrome. This syndrome causes someone to tear their hair out from their head and chew it, which eventually forms a hard lump inside the stomach. A 25-year-old woman from Indore, Madhya Pradesh was diagnosed with this syndrome. After a three-hour-long surgery, doctors removed a ball of hair weighing around 1.5 kg was removed from her stomach, according to news reports. A PTI report states that the surgery took place at the government-run Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital in the city. A five-member team of doctors conducted the surgery led by Dr. RK Mathur. The doctors have informed that the woman’s condition is now stable. Rapunzel’s Syndrome essentially makes a person tear their hair out involuntarily and chew it. As time passes, this leads to the formation of a lump in the stomach, which causes loss of appetite, loss of weight and abdominal distension, states an Indian Express article. Fortunately, in this case, the problem was identified in its early stages. Dr. Mathur told PTI that had the hair not been removed from her stomach, it would have caused a serious medical problem. In the recent past, several other women have been found suffering from this syndrome. For instance, in September this year, doctors in a Mumbai hospital pulled out a 750 gm giant hairball from a woman suffering from the rare Rapunzel Syndrome. Earlier in June, a 15-year-old girl was diagnosed with this syndrome. Doctors at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Thane, Maharashtra, performed a two-hour long surgery and removed a hairball weighing 2.5 kg from her stomach.
