Possibility of Major Earthquake in Uttarakhand, Say Scientists - JPKee.com

New Delhi, Nov 22: The scientists at the National Centre for Seismology have predicted the possibility of a ‘major’ earthquake in Uttarakhand in future. The earthquake, the scientists say, might have a devastating effect. Scientists from the Seismology centre attended a two-day national workshop on disaster resilient infrastructure in the Himalayas in Dehradun and highlighted that the state may witness a major quake in future.
Speaking to news agency ANI, the Director of National Centre of Seismology said, “Statistics indicate there is a possibility of a major earthquake in Uttarakhand in future. Reasons to believe so, no major earthquake has struck the region in past 500-700 years and energy required to build major earthquakes accumulating since 100 of years.”

The last major earthquake in Uttarakhand had occurred at least 600 years ago. The scientists have also asked the government to help in building tremor-resilient infrastructure to prevent damage.
Vinod K Gaur, a professor at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru, in his address pushed on spreading awareness so that people adopt the techniques of building tremor-resilient infrastructure. He also said that since Uttarakhand was in Central Seismic Gap, there’s a high probability of it suffering a quake.
Another professor from IIT-Roorkee underlines the presence of earthquake early warning system and emphasised on the need for its expansion.
