Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017: Congress’ First List of Candidates Feature 10 Adivasis - JPKee.com

Ahmedabad, Nov 19: The Congress on Sunday released its first list of candidates for Gujarat Assembly polls. In order to woo Adivasis in its fold, it has given tickets to 10 Scheduled Tribe candidates in its first list. The Adivasis has been considered a traditional vote bank for Congress but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made inroads into this significant voter base.
The state has 9 million Adivasis which constitute at least 15 percent of its voters. BJP holds 11 of the 27 Assembly constituencies reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

In Congress Working Committee meet last year, Rahul Gandhi had said Adivasis are being deprived of their rights. “Atrocities against Dalits go unabated. The rights of Adivasis continue to be trampled upon,” Gandhi said.
In 2012 Gujarat Assembly Elections, Congress won 57 out of 182 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered victory on 119 seats.
The Congress, which has been out of power in the key western state for over 22 years now, has been trying hard to increase its tally in the state.
The last date of filing nominations for the first phase of polls in Gujarat is November 21. Voting for the first phase will be held on December 9 while the second phase will go to polls on December 14. The counting of votes will take place on December 18.
