Lucknow, Nov 19: The Congress party on Monday released its list of star campaigners for upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections. The list featured the names of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Gujarat Congress Chief Bharat Sinh Solanki. The party also decided to rope in Rajya Sabha MP Ahmed Patel to lead its campaign in the state.

The grand old party also decided to include former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot after he played a crucial role in bringing Patidar leaders like Hardik Patel in its fold.

Earlier, the party released its first list of candidates for Gujarat assembly elections. The list featured 11 Patel candidates. Gujarat Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil will be contesting the Mandvi seat.

In 2012 Gujarat Assembly Elections, Congress has secured victory 57 out of 182 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept  119 seats. It was left with only 43 MLAs after over dozen of them defected.

The Congress has been trying hard to increase its tally in the state after it was ousted from power in the key western state 22 years ago.

The last date of filing nominations for the first phase of polls in Gujarat is November 21. Voting for the first phase will be held on December 9 while the second phase will go to polls on December 14. The counting of votes will take place on December 18.
