Patna, Nov 25: The Nitish Kumar-led party Janata Dal (United) will be contesting more than 100 seats out of 182 in the upcoming Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017. JD(U)’s national secretary General KC Tyagi was quoted as saying that the party will contest 40 seats in the first phase, scheduled on December 9, and 60 in the second phase, scheduled on December 14. However, he said, the number of seats the JD(U) would be fighting on could increase up to 110 as the party would also be distributing tickets to Patidar and Tribal leaders.

“Total number of seats may rise to even 110 as large number of Patidar and tribal leaders, who are disgruntled with allocation of only five seats each to Patidar leader Hardik Patel and the Chhotubhai Vasawa group by the Congress, have approached us and expressed their desire to contest polls on the JD(U)’s ‘arrow’ symbol,” KC Tyagi told TOI.

He added that the party is accessing the how many seats it will contest on. Tyagi said that most of the tickets would be given to the Patidars and the tribal leaders as they have supported the party since long. The last date to file nomination for the first phase was November 21 and for the second phase, it is November 27.

“Patidars are now more disgruntled with Congress as it officially allocated only five seats to the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel, whereas our leader Nitish Kumar has been supporting the Patidar’s quota demand since the beginning of its agitation,” Tyagi said, reported TOI.

Speaking of Lalu Prasad’s allegations that the JD (U) party is fighting elections to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with which it has formed the government in Bihar, Tyagi said that the party is contesting the elections with a motive of expanding the footing of it in other areas.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar would not be campaigning for the JD(U) candidates in the upcoming Gujarat Assembly Elections. “It will be against the dignity of Bihar CM to go to campaign against the CM of another NDA constituents in Gujarat,” Tyagi said. The party, however, will send 20 of its top leaders to campaign in Gujarat.
