Emmerson Mnangagwa Sworn-in as Zimbabwe President After Robert Mugabe’s Ouster - JPKee.com

Harare, Nov 24: Emmerson Mnangagwa, 70-year veteran leader also known as ‘Crocodile’,  was sworn-in as Zimbabwe President on Friday. After days of stalemate, Mnangagwa took the oath of President in front of thousands of jubilant supporters in a stadium in the national capital. Mnangagwa’s elevation comes days after he was ousted from the country by former president Robert Mugabe citing ‘traits of disloyalty’.

Even though the veteran leader succeeded in becoming the second president after Zimbabwe’s freedom, he will have to address a slew of issues including the economic growth and political stability. He will have to shed his image of a person suppressing human rights after he grabs power in his hand. Arch rivals and wife of Robert Mugabe, Grace Mugabe alleged a crackdown on her supporters soon the path to power was made clear for Mnangagwa.

Mugabe is in increasingly frail health and had been positioning his wife Grace as his successor, but the army chiefs acted to halt the plan and usher in Mnangagwa. State-run media had earlier claimed that Mugabe may even attend his successor’s swearing-in — but later suggested that after he and Mnangagwa talked about the inauguration, he agreed he “needed time to rest”.

Mnangagwa also “assured him and his family maximum security and welfare” for their future as private citizens, the state-run Herald news site also reported.
